Math Class Completes Survey

by Jackie Sisk

January 20, 2006

Mrs. Sisk's 8th grade math students recently completed a project over surveys. They took the following steps during the two-week project: chose a topic, created unbiased questions, type the surveys, use a sampling method to chose which students would take their survey, write a hypothesis, distribute and collect the survey, create frequency tables and graphs in Microsoft Excel, present their findings to fellow classmates, post the graphs, and write summaries about their experience. Here is a summary written by the groups about their findings from the surveys. The results are posted in the math room if you would like to view them. The students did a great job on this project and deserve a pat on the back!

Professional Football - Josh S., Ryan S., Britany B.

Most students watch about 0 -150 NFL games per year. The 6th grade stated that they watch football the least but got most answers right when asked questions like 'How many NFL teams are there' and 'How many players are allowed on the field at one time.' The favorite NFL team overall is the Chiefs and favorite overall position is quarterback. Most students agree that girls should not be allowed to play football. We surveyed ten students per grade and chose them systematically.

In-School Sports - Korina O., Marc G., Terrence R.

Most students who took our survey were girls. The students' favorite in-school sport was basketball while least favorite was cheerleading. There was a yes/no tie when asked if girls should be able to play football or if boys should be allowed to participate in volleyball or cheerleading. The junior high believes we should have a mascot and would change the school colors to blue and white if they were not burgundy and white. The 6th, 7th, and 8th graders would like to add soccer as a school sport. They also believe that it is unfair that 6th grade students have to wait until 7th grade to play sports. We surveyed 10 per grade.

Clothing- Heidi K., Matt S., Autumn C.

Mostly females took our survey. The junior high liked to shop at Goody's and The Buckle the most. They usually shop with their moms or friends on Saturdays. Their favorite clothing to wear is jeans. They like to shop for shoes and pants/jeans. Most of the students only spend $0- 21 dollars on clothes and shoes. A lot of students liked the colors blue and pink for clothes. We chose 15 students randomly from each grade.

Cars- Joe T.,Kari C., Laura S

To the question, "What kind of vehicle would you like to drive," the 6th and 8th graders chose a Dodge while the 7th graders favor a Ford. They favor the color black. The students choose a Lamborghini as the fastest car our of Lamborghini, Corvette, Hummer, and Mustangs. Students believe a motorcycle gets the best gas mileage out of motorcycles, vans, SUV's and cars. Finally, junior high students see cars driven on the road most. We chose 13 students from each grade randomly to give this survey.

Music- Dayzsa N., Sam T., Kelci W.

The junior high's favorite radio station to listen to is 92.5 and their second is 96.9. 6th graders like rap while 7th and 8th like country. However, rap ended up being the number one choice for the junior high. Students listen to music at home or in the car the most and, on average, listen for more than 2 hours per day. They listen to CD's the most in their CD players. Most CD's are purchased at Wal-Mart. Our group chose 10 students from each grade using the stratified sampling method.

Oceans- Makenzie S., Ian H.

We asked students about oceans to see how much they knew. They got the western-most ocean (Pacific) and northern-most (Arctic) oceans correct as well as the warmest (Indian) and coldest (Arctic). However, the students believed that the Pacific or Atlantic oceans were the cleanest, but that title belongs to the Indian Ocean. The dirtiest is the Pacific Ocean, but Northeast students believed the Indian was the dirtiest. They chose the smallest (Indian) and largest (Pacific) oceans correctly. When junior high students were asked which ocean they would most like to visit, they chose the Pacific or Atlantic. The majority of our surveys were taken by females and most of the correct answers were given by 8th graders. We believe this is because they have had Geography for three years now. We chose 10 students from each grade systematically.

Ice Cream- Stephanie C., Chad M., Christin R.

When asked if they liked ice cream, every single students surveyed said yes! Their favorite kind of ice cream was a tie between chocolate chip and cookie dough and their least favorite was pecan. Students eat ice cream out of a bowl or cup most often and like to top it with Reese's Pieces or chocolate. If they get to chose a restaurant, the students go to Braums or Dairy Castle. The 6th, 7th, and 8th graders like ice cream best during summer and like to eat it inside (not outside). We used the random sampling method and chose 15 students from each class.
