WHOOO! Has Learned All About Owls? -- 4th Graders

by Susan Herrell

November 10, 2006

The 4th grade students of Mrs. Herrell, Mrs. Puckett, and Mrs. Newman have been studying owls and other birds of prey.  All 3 classes have been learning about the owl's body parts, their eating habits, and their habitats.  They have also discovered that some owls are as tiny as 4 -5 inches while others are over 2 feet tall.

The students have dissected owl pellets and reconstructed the skeletons of the owl's prey.  The highlight of their study was when someone from PSU's Outreach Program presented an assembly on "Birds of Prey" and brought in a screech owl, a barred owl, and a Harris hawk for the students to see up close.  It was awesome!! I have to admit -- this 4th grade teacher fell hard for that cute little screech owl!
