He's Got the Gallon Man Blues

Mr. Mahnken Teaches Measurement

Shari Miller

February 09, 2007

Fifth grade students at Northeast Elementary School received a rare treat this week.  Mr. Steve Mahnken of Girard, a student teacher in fifth grade, taught his very first lesson, and what a lesson it was!

Mr. Mahnken brought his guitar to school, and students learned about measurement as they rocked out to various versions of the Gallon Man Song, set to the tune of Sally the Camel.

Students learned  about cups, pints, quarts, and gallons as they sang, clapped, and danced their way to an education.  It is unlikely they will ever forget the words to the song, or the measurement equivalents it teaches, as they joyfully repeated the song  a dozen different times in a dozen different ways, including rock and roll and blues variations.  Then Mr. Mahnken challenged students to come up with their own gallon man song, a gallon man rap.

When the music was over, students colored a picture of the gallon man, then built giant paper models and hung them in the halls for all to see.  Some students even got creative with the gallon man theme.  We now have not only gallon men, but rosy-cheeked gallon ladies, gallon aliens, gallon musicians, and even a gallon llama adorning our hallways.

Students and teachers alike are anxious to see what Mr. Mahnken will come up with next.  Whatever it is, it’s sure to be a winner with the kids.
