Parent - Teacher Communications...

...to be Enhanced

by Randy Rivers

July 05, 2007

Northeast USD 246 will roll out a new tool to improve parent-teacher communication and to increase student accountability in 2007-2008.  The district will provide parents and students online access to a tool called PowerSchool.  This web-based information tool will allow parents and students, with appropriate privacy safeguards, to check on the student's grades anytime 24/7 over the Internet.

Parents and students may obtain their user ID's and passwords to access this tool at parent by contacting the school technology aides.

Imagine parents, students, teachers and school administrators being able to see most of the student records that we currently maintain any time they wish. Northeast USD 246 is pleased to provide this data to the people who have the greatest influence on a student's education - parents and teachers. PowerSchool remedies the information gap by making these records viewable on the Internet.

PowerSchool provides a list of e-mail addresses for school staff members (accessible by all users), and for parents (accessible by the school staff). While viewing a student's class schedule or grades, a parent may immediately post an e-mail message to a teacher simply by clicking on the teacher's name, and a teacher may send a message to a parent.

Parent involvement in their child's education is one of the most important factors in school success and achievement. PowerSchool enhances the parent role in their child's day-to-day school experience by providing secured access to information such as daily and weekly assignments, grades, and attendance over the Internet. Parent involvement is positively associated with student academic success, higher attendance rates and lower suspension rates.

10/19/2005 I am very excited about this tool. This will help me help my kids because when they have a low grade I will be able to look and find out if they have not turned in home work or what else may be the problem. Great idea and I am excited about this. Michelle Palmer catsmommie@pixius.net
10/22/2005 This has been something that has been brought to many school board members as a need for the parents of USD246. I for one will be using it at least weekly to ensure my daughter is doing her homework and to monitor her grades. It is also a great way to communicate with the teachers as well. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this resource.

01/03/2006 I think this is an awesome idea! My three boys will begin attending Arma schools while they live with their father and step-mother in Arcadia, and because I live on the other side of Joplin it will definitely make it easier to track their progress. I have always been active with my children’s education and I feel more comfortable knowing this tool exists. Thanks a lot from involved mom in Missouri! :) Sandy Butler nofear_73@hotmail.com
10/31/2006 I think this is a great tool and use it regularly to monitor grades, however I have not been able to find homework assignments on line. Am I just missing something? Peg Horn phorn@wardkraft.com Fort Scott digital press operator
03/30/2007 I think intouch online has been a good idea but there is one problems with it. When my parents go online to check my grades, some of them will not have been put into the computer yet or on intouch. Therefore causing me to get in trouble for a grade thats been written in the book but has not yet been posted online. This problem could be fixed simply by asking the teachers to put in grades more often and giving students a progress report every two weeks. Now don't get me wrong the program will inform students and parents alike but, it could improve.
