Extended Learning Programs...

...Expand at Northeast USD 246

August 03, 2007

Northeast Schools will be initiating new programs in the 2007-2008 school year to provide extended learning sessions for many students.  The district was selected by the Kansas State Department of Education to receive a five-year 21st Century Community Learning Center program grant.  This grant will provide the district with approximately $360,000 over a five year period to develop a cross-age tutoring and curriculum enrichment project that will operate Monday through Thursday from 3:30 – 5:30 PM during the school year.

High school students will be trained as tutors and provide tutoring services for up to 54 students each day.  Additionally, the grant provides for a system of enrichment activities to be developed to provide a wide array of activities for approximately 30 students each afternoon.  This program will be in addition to the district's "Project Care" program that provides day care for students until 5:30 PM.  The grant also provides for an additional activity bus route each evening.  Now the district will be providing two full routes to transport children participating in extended learning and extracurricular activities home after 5:30 PM.  Program coordinator for the 21st Century community learning center is Debbie Schaub.  The Director of Project Care is Marie Williford .

In addition to these programs, the junior high and high school will also be initiating projects known as "Work In Now" or WIN.  These programs will provide for supervision of students before and after school who fail to turn in work on time.  Students missing assignment deadlines will be required to stay after school or come in early to complete late assignments.  The junior high program will run from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM each day after school and the high school program will run from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM and again from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM each day.  WIN programs are administered by the building principals.
