Apprenticeships: A registered apprenticeship is an opportunity to earn money while learning a skilled trade. It involves entering into an agreement with an employer in which the employer assumes the responsibility of teaching the trade to the apprentice. Apprenticeships combine supervised on-the-job training with related classroom instruction covering such topics as safety measures, theories, and techniques.
Training typically
lasts 3-4 years.
Upon completion individuals receive a certificate that is
recognized in all states as proof of skills.
There are
over 800 occupations that require apprenticeship training. Examples include:
|
Chef |
Machinist |
Auto & Motorcycle Mechanic |
|
Carpenter |
Plumber |
Electrician |
|
Fire Fighter |
Lineman |
Early Childhood Associate
|
Most employers require a high school diploma or GED to enter their apprenticeship program. It is a good idea to have a strong background in math and technical training as well.

On-the-Job Training and Full-Time Employment: On-the-job training is provided by the employer, and it can last from a few hours to several months. Generally, an on-the-job training program does not prepare a person for a career; instead, it teachers one how to perform specific job tasks.
High school students who choose full-time employment
upon graduation should consider finding a job in an area that they
are likely to pursue as a career. For example, a student
might think about working as an assistant in a law office if he or
she is thinking about working in the legal field someday.
It is very important to have created a resume before
graduating from high school. A copy of the resume can be
included with the various job applications. Getting started
is the hardest step.
Students, who choose on-the job training as their
educational option, should have a five-year plan. This can
help insure that they do not get trapped in a job that offers
little opportunity for advancement. Additional education and
training is an option any time after graduation.
Americorps: A national service program in which individuals work for 1 or 2 years helping communities with a variety of needs. After a year of service, one receives $4,725 to be used for education. For information call 1-800-942-2677 or visit www.americorps.org
