Mrs. Vanderpool's Kindergarten Fall Activities

by Debbie Vanderpool

October 05, 2007

Mrs. Vanderpool's kindergarten class has been reading the book Peanut Butter and Jelly along with their new letter of the week letter "Pp".  To further our learning of the letter "Pp" we made peanut butter and grape jelly sandwiches for our snack time.

Students put on plastic gloves and had a fun time cleaning the seeds out of their pumpkin.  Then, we carved the pumpkin into a jack-o-lantern, estimated the number of seeds in our pumpkin, counted the seeds, and finally roasted the pumpkin seeds to enjoy at snack time.  After grouping the seeds in groups of ten, then groups of hundreds, we arrived at 481 being the total number of seeds in our pumpkin.  We discussed what making an estimation meant, and Emily Hensley's estimation of 600 was the closest.  We recently had "Friday Cap Day" to help us learn the letter "Cc".  We had a wide variety of caps.  Students really enjoyed showing off their cap and reading what was written on each other's cap.

On October 17th, we will be taking an afternoon field trip to a pumpkin patch at Hickory Creek Farms.  Students will learn how pumpkins are grown, visit the Critter Coral, and pick their very own mini-pumpkin from the pumpkin patch to take home.  What a learning experience and fun day that will be!  Parents please remember our music program is Tuesday, October 9th at 7:00 at Northeast High School.  Please have your child there by 6:45. Also, remember that our Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 17th and Thursday, October 18th.  This is an important meeting as we will be discussing your child's grade card and progress.  I look forward to meeting with each of my student's family.
