Chalking Up Our Demographics
November 01, 2007
There is more to sidewalk chalk than pretty pictures and hopscotch. Sixth graders in Mrs. Popejoy’s business class enjoyed the mild fall weather while learning to graphically represent demographics of a population last Thursday. The students gathered demographic information such as eye color, right or left handedness, and gender in their class then it was off to the sidewalks.
Using pie charts and line graphs, the students applied the data they had collected in the classroom. Earlier in the year, the students decorated the sidewalks with their representations of the supply of and demand for varieties of mini candy bars in “Chocolate Economics”.
“The students don’t even realize they’re using economic concepts; they think they’re just having fun,” said Renee’ Popejoy, business instructor. “The more hands-on and real life examples I can use, the better understanding the students will gain,” Popejoy continued.
What’s next on the horizon for the sixth grade business class?
The students are going to learn about consumers’ rights and
actually contact a company to register a complaint. “I want the
students to know that there are laws in place to protect the
consumer. We’ll identify a justifiable problem with a product or
company and contact the manufacturer, going through the proper
channels,” said Popejoy.
