The Northeast High School Forensics team traveled to Allen County Community College to participate in the school’s first “Drama Day,” hosted by the ACCC Theatre Department. Tony and Jan Piazza, as well as ACCC drama students, led participants through workshops in Voice and Movement, Acting, Auditioning, and Improvisation.
While all classes were interesting, students seemed to most enjoy the acting class. In the first activity, students were paired with students from other schools and given a task list: to make their partner laugh, make their partner feel sorry for them, study their partner’s eyebrows and mouth, and to do it all without speaking. Other acting exercises followed, such as “Red Dot/Blue Dot,” in which students create a scene using only the words red dot and blue dot, and “1 through 10,” in which students are given a scenario and act out a scene using the numbers 1 through 10 in place of dialogue. This forces students to convey meaning through voice, facial expressions, and body language rather than relying on lines.
“We would like this to become a yearly event,” said Mr. Piazza of the day long event. NEHS students had a chance to work closely with students that they will be competing against in the fall, as well as college-level drama students. All students attending expressed that they would like to go back next year if the event is held again.
