The Art Room Diner

Slide Show ---->  The Art Room Diner

When you walk into the art room at the high school it still has the aroma of fresh paint, cleaners, turpentine, oil paintings , and the smell of raw clay. But if you check the “big oven”, as it is so commonly referred to by the art students, you’ll be surprised to find odorless food!
Yes, odorless! The students have modeled bacon and eggs, sausage and hash-browns, pancakes, pie, cake, pizza, burritos, chicken and mashed potatoes, baked potatoes and steaks out of lumps of clay.

We have a whopper burger and golden fries that makes your mouth water. Some kids design and build ethnic foods while others lean toward desserts, snacks, and their favorites like pizza or cookies. Every time the students see all the different ceramic foods on display you can hear their stomachs growling. It’s all a matter of design and manipulation of the clay.

The students start out with the simplest of simple clay pinch pots in an effort to learn how the clay will react to the various processes of building. It’s a good opportunity to get the feel of the clay and get their fingernails dirty. When they discover that the clay washes off with water, they get more excited about experimenting with different ideas.

We go through various processes of building and learning to respect the medium before tackling larger projects. The students learn patience and perseverance when working with clay because just when you think you’re finished, you get another idea, or you have to wait for the clay to dry before it can be fired in the kiln.
