...Students with wealth of factual knowledge should join Scholars’ Bowl teams next fall
April 28, 2008
Scholars’ Bowl for the 2008-2009 season is peeping over the
horizon, hoping to lure anxious students to join the Northeast High
School’s varsity and junior-varsity teams.
Varsity consists of mostly juniors and seniors, but because no
juniors were on the 2007-2008 teams, positions will be open to
sophomores and even freshmen to fill out the ranks, according to
Barbara Crim, Scholars’ Bowl coach.
Practices are on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7 a.m. until 8
a.m. “I buy Little Debbie’s Cakes for everyone to eat, and even
sometimes Long Johns from Wal-Mart, when I have the money,” Crim
said.
“We practice with the buzzers and set the room up just like real
meets. We also have seven or eight books a reader uses to ask
questions. Whoever answers correctly receives points and has a
better chance of making the varsity team,” Crim said.
Returning team members include sophomores Nick Popejoy, Makenzie
Stansbury, Sam Truesdell, and possibly Chris Ward. Returning
freshmen are Elizabeth Banks, Ally Bolds, Josh Tingley, and Dakota
Kuhel.
“I have already started to try to talk some others into it,
especially sophomore Ian Horn and freshman Chris Katzer, but
mentioning it too much to anyone of them can have the opposite
effect, so I try not to ask them too many times because it becomes
irritating,” Crim said.
“This is the perfect organization for anyone who wants or likes to
play factual games such as Trivial Pursuit. Students whose heads
are full of useful, as well as unuseful facts, shine at these
events,” Crim said. “If a student reads a lot and remembers all the
significant or insignificant details, Scholars’ Bowl is a perfect
organization if he or she wants to remove the clutter from his or
her brain. A brain that is too full can be heavy if one does not
use up the facts.”
“We will also host our own tournament sometime in very late
October,” Crim said.
“Remember, everyone is welcome to come to a practice to see if the
process might appeal to him or her,” Crim said. “The returning
players hope to see some new faces in the fall. Also, anyone who
plays all season is eligible to letter.”
Meets begin at the end of October and continue through the first of
February. Regionals are on the schedule for Southeast Cherokee, and
State has not been announced.
“I even welcome basketball players because they can stop when their
season begins and come back for Regionals and State if possible,”
Crim said.
