Part of the creed of Kansas Association for Youth says to "Give yourself to a cause". The members of NEHS KAY have done just that. On February 28, 2009, five members and one sponsor participated in the annual "Bowl for Kids' Sake" event hosted by Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Crawford County. Members of the team were Allyson Boles, Stephanie Collier, Curtis Major, Jesse Snider and Makenzie Stansbury. Their sponsor is Renee' Popejoy.
This marks the second year NEHS KAY has had a team in the event. "This year we even challenged other organizations in the school to get a team and participate," said Collier. "No one took us up on it. They must know what awesome bowlers we are," laughed Collier.
Students collected donations for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization as an entry fee for the event. Each student received two lines of bowling, free pizza; cookies and pop; and entries for door prize drawings. For raising $75 or more, each student received a t-shirt as well.
The highlight of the day was the "Heads or Tails" game where each persons pays $1 to enter, then guesses whether a coin will land on its head or tail. To indicate your choice, participants put their hands on either their head or their "tail". The game continues until all but one member is eliminated. This year the winner was Snider.
"Our students had a great time," said Popejoy. "They raised over $350 for the event and gave up their Saturday to help out. I am incredibly proud of our group. We hope to have even more teams involved next year."
