Northeast Scholars’ Bowl grabs first place at 16-team Girard meet
By Barbara Crim
November 17, 2009
Knowledge of questions in social studies, language arts, mathematics, science, fine arts and year in review toppled Northeast varsity Scholars’ Bowl right over 15 other teams from Pittsburg, Fort Scott, Girard , Iola, Chanute, Oswego, Baxter Springs, Humboldt, Colgan, Crest Colony, Uniontown, Frontenac, Southeast, St. Paul and Chetopa High School at the Girard Invitational Scholars’ Bowl Tournament Monday.
“‘What is Japanese wine called?’ ‘Saki,’ replied junior Dakota Kuhel, to shut down Humboldt in the final round and to nail the first-place win,” senior captain Chris Ward said.
“‘What holiday occurs in Great Britain and Canada right after Christmas?’ ‘Boxing Day’,” junior Elizabeth Banks answered to beat Pittsburg High School to enter the final round.
To arrive at that point in the meet, Banks answered “centipede” to beat Girard in a tie-breaker in the first of the three rounds of finals.
“Neither Girard nor Pittsburg could believe Northeast had beaten them in the final rounds,” freshman Brittny Neil said. “Disbelief was all over their faces.”
“Hoo-hah’s were flying as the team exited the finals’ room,” Barbara Crim, adviser, said. “It was excitement central. I just couldn’t believe it. They silently and powerfully came from behind to win the entire tournament.”
“I skipped all the way home from the corner where Crim let me out,” senior Sam Truesdell said.
“The Girard tournament is one of our largest and toughest. This is the first time in history we have won it,” Crim said.
“Linda Knoll, the reader of the final round, congratulated Chris Ward and the entire team for answering some difficult questions,” Crim said.
“We have seven more meets,” Ward said. “My intentions are easy to guess—win, win, win.”
The junior varsity team didn’t score any wins last night, but each one of them answered multiple questions, and they came within five points of winning a match, according to Crim. They also won two rounds at the season-opener at Oswego High School. The varsity also won two matches at Oswego.
The teams play at Colgan High School on Thursday night beginning at 4 p.m. There will be two varsity teams playing.
