Tie-Dye Hits Northeast

March 31, 2010

Peace, Love & Vikings For the past six weeks, the students in Renee' Popejoy’s  Intro to Business class has been working on something new to most Northeast students…tie-dye.  The student-run corporation created by the class, Captains of Industry,  sold t-shirts to be tie-dyed by students and adults at the PTO School Carnival.

"The kids were really good at it," said senior Heidi Hayes. "Most of the adults wanted us to dye theirs for them, though," Hayes continued.

The 24 students in the class worked the project from beginning to end... from sourcing all supplies, including rubber bands, squirt bottles and shirts, to banding the designs into the t-shirts before the carnival.  “My students were amazing!” said instructor Renee’ Popejoy “They came in each day, got to work and knocked this thing out. Some of them even gave up their personal time to sell shirts at the parent-teacher conferences as well as work the carnival.”

Peace, Love & Vikings was the theme for the shirts. The project was very well received.  “Originally, our target market was the grade school students, but we had to place an order the day before the carnival for more adult sizes,” explained Chief Financial Officer Clint Johnson, senior.

The project was not only a learning opportunity for the class, but it was also a chance for them to work with the younger students.  When asked his favorite part of the project, Chief Executive Officer Nick Popejoy, senior, answered “for me it was seeing all of the grade school kids and getting to work with them. It was awesome to see them get so excited.”

Captains of Industry will continue to sell the shirts until the inventory is depleted.  Sizes available at present are: youth small-extra large and adult small-2xl. The shirts are $10 each (2xl is $11).  For more information, contact Renee’ Popejoy at rpopejoy@usd246.org  or 347-4115 ext. 119 or Nick Popejoy at npopejoy@usd246.net.
